Whilst the ideal of adopting a zero-waste approach, on grounds of sustainable construction, is well understood, to achieve it in practice can be challenging. A great deal of research has been undertaken worldwide on recycled aggregates and their use in construction and the standards/codes are slowly becoming more receptive. However, just as in the case of natural aggregates, it is important to understand how best to develop the use of recycled aggregates. Based on the vast amount of information, collated from over 1400 publications originating globally from over 65 countries, analysed and evaluated, and presented in over 600 print pages in a book form, this workshop aims to discuss the production, characteristics and use of recycled aggregates in mortar, concrete, geotechnics and road pavements. In addition, environmental impact arising from the use of the materials will be addressed.References will be made to the related standards and codes, as well as case studies undertaken using recycled aggregates. The book, used as course notes, is structured in an incisive and easy to digest manner and is particularly suited for aggregate suppliers, ready-mixed concrete producers, design engineers, specifiers, contractors, as well as academics and researchers.

The SS 638 : 2018 (formerly CP 5) and SS 650 : 2019 Parts 1&2 (formerly CP 88 Parts 1&2) are mandatory requirements under the Electricity (Electrical Installations) Regulations in Singapore. The standards set out the safety rules and wiring practices that shall be observed in carrying out low voltage design, operation and maintenance works by persons or parties involved, such as licensed electrical workers, electrical contractors, consultant firms, testing companies, supervisors and workers engaged in electrical wiring and fitting works, etc. The aim is to ensure safety, especially from electric shock and fire in the use of electricity. The implementation of these standards has helped to reduce the number of electrocution and fire incidents in the use of electricity occurring over the years.

The Collaborative Alliance Conference (CAC) is a continuation of the previous BOA-ACES Conferences in 2017 and 2018. The inauguration of this new conference reflects accurately the aspiration of collaboration. Seven organisations have come together for this effort.Board of Architects (BOA),Professional Engineers Board (PEB),Association of Consulting Engineers Singapore (ACES),The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES),Real Estate Developers Association of Singapore (REDAS),Singapore Contractors Association Ltd (SCAL), andSingapore Institute of Architects (SIA).The theme for the 2019 Conference isFuture Economy: Towards a more enterprising and pro-business transformation. The built environment sector value chain is one of the most extensive in the Singapore economy. The sector contributes significantly to the positive transformation of the physical landscape and the socio-economic development of the nation. It also contributes significantly to the well-being of our community. The launch of the Industry Transformation Maps comes with initiatives for deepening partnerships between the private and public sectors. There are also calls for greater integration across the various sectors in the industry. Integration will bring about synergies, with hopes to shift mind-sets towards organizing resources. In turn, the quality of jobs will be elevated, and people will be upskilled. Innovation and internationalization will help us to remain competitive in the future global economy.Discussion Theme:1. Enterprising & Innovative Economy;2. Progressive Business; and3. Internationalisation. This annual conference is designed to gather the build environment fraternity, as well as its various stakeholders in the value chain together, to debate, share and exchange views on the challenges and growth prospects of the built environment sector.CPD: PDU to be confirmed

As the world undergoes its third industrial revolution, we are experiencing advances in new technology that will transform the way we live, work and play. Digital Transformation is the big megatrend that is changing the way we look at buildings. By harnessing the connectivity of the Internet of Things and rethinking the ways we can combine the intelligence of humans with the power of technology, we will then be able to create smart and green homes for all.

Buildings need to be designed properly and built safely. Industry stakeholders are required to comply with the building regulations and adopt good practices when carrying out building works to ensure construction works are properly designed and carried out without compromise to structural safety, or cause damage to surrounding properties. This session aims to highlight the importance of building safety compliance. BCA will share the upcoming building control initiatives as well as good practices for both the design and construction of building works. A preview of a newly developed design guide on the use of Grade B600 high strength reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures will be shared.
