Singapore experiences the highest incidence of lightning strikes in the world. These lightning strikes have caused major disruptions to main systems equipment and considerable damage to building structures. Understanding of lightning phenomenon and proper setup of lightning protection system are critical for the protection of lives, properties and equipment. The 2-day course aims to provide participants with an understanding of the effects of lightning and various lightning protection methods for building structures. It will also cover various analytical methods for the performance assessment of lightning protection systems.

The VDC certificate program was first introduced in 2008 by the Stanford Universitys Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE). The intended outcome of the program is to enable industry professionals to effectively apply VDC to obtain higher return for their businesses and capital projects. To date, hundreds of participants in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia including Singapore have benefited from the program, many of whom have successfully implemented VDC in thier projects. The Stanford CIFE-BCA Advanced Management Program in Virtual Design andConstruction comprises four modules to be delivered over a 8-month period.

Since 1 April 2015, all structural plans submission have to be based on Eurocode (EC) design standards. EC was developed over the last 30 years by experts from the European Union and is considered as one of the worlds most advanced and established building codes. This move is part of BCAs ongoing efforts in raising the standards of structural building design. To prepare engineers for the adoption of EC in the design of reinforced concrete structures, this workshop will approach the design of concrete structures using EC in comparison with BS 8110. The workshop will contain lectures as well as hands-on tutorial sessions to provide participants with practical design experience. This workshop is jointly organised by BCA Academy and Protective Technology Research Centre of Nanyang Technological University.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) are engineered wood systems which have been identified as innovative products that can raise construction productivity. Such systems offer greater design flexibility, rapid installation, and waste and weight reduction as seen in many construction projects overseas. In the local scene, the industry has become more aware of the benefits of such technology, with a number of CLT/Glulam projects in the pipeline. In order to gain real traction for its adoption, the various considerations such as humidity, performance, termite protection, building envelope design and fire safety regulations have to be addressed. This 2-day workshop aims to elevate the knowledge and skill of the participants in the design and construction of CLT and Glulam structures. It will address the various considerations which may have caused reservations in its adoption.
