The SS 638 : 2018 (formerly CP 5) and SS 650 : 2019 Parts 1&2 (formerly CP 88 Parts 1&2) are mandatory requirements under the Electricity (Electrical Installations) Regulations in Singapore. The standards set out the safety rules and wiring practices that shall be observed in carrying out low voltage design, operation and maintenance works by persons or parties involved, such as licensed electrical workers, electrical contractors, consultant firms, testing companies, supervisors and workers engaged in electrical wiring and fitting works, etc. The aim is to ensure safety, especially from electric shock and fire in the use of electricity. The implementation of these standards has helped to reduce the number of electrocution and fire incidents in the use of electricity occurring over the years.

Buildings need to be designed properly and built safely. Industry stakeholders are required to comply with the building regulations and adopt good practices when carrying out building works to ensure construction works are properly designed and carried out without compromise to structural safety, or cause damage to surrounding properties.This session aims to highlight the importance of building safety compliance. BCA will share the upcoming building control initiatives as well as good practices for both the design and construction of building works. A preview of a newly developed design guide on the use of Grade B600 high strength reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures will be shared.

The specific objective of Module 1 on Piling & Foundations is to familiarize participants with piling methods adopted in Singapore and the region and how to supervise the installation of piles. With increasing numbers of building & infrastructural as well as industrial assets located in close proximity to, and even within aqueous or marine environments, protection of materials of construction, particularly steel and other metals, against corrosion is of great importance. The seminar will address the developments in the understanding of galvanic corrosion, and the various methods and procedures necessary for achieving corrosion protection, with particular emphasis on cathodic protection.

Portable fire extinguishers can be real life savers as they can be used both at home and the workplace. This seminar will provide an update on the latest SS 578 : 2019 Code of practice for the use and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. Portable fire extinguishers are regulated fire safety products and compliance with the requirements in the SS 578 is necessary as stipulated in the Fire Code. SS 578 covers the requirements for selection, installation, inspection, testing and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers.
