Safety is influenced by a number of factors such as workplace environment, managements commitment to safety, attitude or behaviour of working personnel towards safety, etc. Workers positive behaviour towards safety is considered one of the key factors in preventing accidents at workplaces. A successful introduction of behavioural safety process, focussing on identifying and reducing unsafe behaviour and reinforcing safe behaviour is one means of improving safety at workplaces.Behavioural Safety is a methodology used to improve safety culture through change of behaviour of working personnel in an organisation. This methodology has been applied successfully in other industries like petrochemical and manufacturing and is gaining popularity in the construction industry.

Recently construction sites had started using Prefabricated Prefi nished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) in building construction to improve productivity. The components used in PPVC are much heavier and bulky. To lift such components using cranes, the crane operators need to handle the components (loads) more carefully and position them accurately at specifi ed location points mostly with the help of signalmens walkie-talkie communications as the crane operators are unable to see the locations points due to large size of the PPVC components.

Precast concrete technology had been identified as one of the key areas of focus to improve productivity in the construction industry. It has been observed that there is more room for a greater adoption of this technology in Singapore. Good site management practices and planning of precast concrete construction activities such as on-site/off-site casting of precast members, transportation of the members to site, erection and construction considerations would contribute to more efficient, less labour intensive and faster construction. This would eventually lead to better construction productivity. This workshop provides construction managers with practical knowledge in the planning, execution and control of precast concrete construction. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to plan and manage precast concrete construction site activities effectively.

The Singapore Accreditation Council (SAC) of SPRING Singapore, with the support of Geotechnical Society of Singapore (GeoSS), Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and Land Transport Authority (LTA) has introduced an accreditation scheme for site investigation firms. As part of the accreditation requirements for site investigation firms, site investigation supervisors of the firms are required to undergo a training course on site investigation. Upon successfully completing the course, they can be registered as Certified Site Investigation Supervisor with GeoSS.

Computational BIM approach enables professionals from the built industry to explore and automate more design options leading to desired solution for productivity gain. The design approach also makes the creation of complex geometry possible and accurate. This 2-day workshop covers the practical applications, modelling workflow and integration of model with BIM software to enhance the design process. Participants will be equipped with practical computational BIM skills and technical knowledge through the hands-on sessions. Industry practitioners will also be invited to share on their experience in adopting computational BIM in their projects or workflws.

Lean Construction techniques aim to improve processes through waste minimisation. A synergy of Lean Construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM) will certainly have a profound impact on productivity and hence profitability. In this workshop, Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is introduced as the combination of 4D BIM and lean construction management to achieve optimization of the construction schedule for continuous flow of construction process and better planning in construction management.

While BCA has made significant progress in leading the building industry towards Universal Design (UD) adoption through funding and seminars, the industry is still lacking in their knowledge and application of UD. There is a need to build the industrys capability and capacity in adopting UD so as to create an inclusive and age friendly built environment for all ages. The 4-day programme aims to provide an overview of the various aspects of adopting an inclusive approach to design. The course will adopt a multidisciplinary approach to gain an appreciation of UD through the direct contact with varied user groups in a focused context; the pragmatics of UD supported by an understanding of the theoretical framework; and the ability to source for and apply qualitative & quantitative information regarding the fit between human and the built environment.

Graduate Certificate program in Construction Productivity Enhancement is open to any Bachelor degree holders, in particular B.Eng. (Civil Engineering) degree and B.Eng. (Environmental Engineering with minor in Civil Infrastructure), or equivalent.
