To build up the expertise of industry professionals in ABC Waters design features, the ABC Waters Professional Programme was launched in Sep 2011. Comprising four core modules and four elective modules, the programme covers the concept, design, implementation and maintenance of ABC Waters design features. Participants who complete all four core modules plus any two elective modules, and meet the registration criteria of IES/SIA/SILA, would be eligible to be registered as an ABC Waters Professional.

This is an intensive one-day course on the design of beams and slabs for use in buildings. Both pre-tensioning and post-tensioning are discussed.

This seminar is part of a series of seminars by the Building andConstruction Standards Committee to keep the local industry informed of changes and new standards. The Eurocodes have been implemented in Singapore since April 2015. It has been a learning journey for the local industry.The European standard, EN 1090 (Execution of steel structures andaluminium structures) is the relevant standard for fabrication andinstallation of structural steelwork. This European standard allows the use of higher steel grades not covered in the old BS codes and is usedextensively in Europe and other parts of the world (e.g. China) forcertification of the fabricators.The Singapore version of this standard, SS EN 1090 which is made up of 2 parts has been adopted in Singapore to allow the use of alternative structural steel materials for building works. Certification of fabricators to SS EN 1090 would elevate their competency and therefore, align our local steelwork practice with that required by the Eurocodes.

The regulatory requirement for Design-for-Safety (DfS) was enforced since August 2016. It requires stakeholders to work together to address foreseeable risks right from the conceptual design to the construction of the project. During the construction stage, the DfS review meetings will involve the design & supervision team from the Consultants and construction team from the Contractor. They will participate in reviewing safety and health risks relating to design and propose mitigation measures for implementation.

Safety in construction sites is of paramount importance not only to protect oneself but also to ensure safety for fellow site personnel on site. This programme is for stakeholders in construction projects (Resident Engineers, Resident Technical officers, Site Supervisors etc) and it explains the laws on safety for construction site and discusses construction safety for the various site operations commonly executed in a construction project.Participants will know how the current laws related to safety in Singapore protect them and their fellow site personnel. They will be able to supervise and/or carry out daily site operations with a focus on safety. They are able to identify hazards related to various site activities and take steps to control risks arising from such hazards.

Reinforced concrete is still commonly used for building and construction in Singapore and around the world. Sustainability considerations in recent years have resulted in an in creased focus on the repair and refurbishment of all types of concrete structures rather than demolition and redevelopment. Furthermore, defects are now more evident in building constructed during the boom years of economic growth when buildings are erected at a very fast pace. Resident Engineers (REs) and Resident Technical Officers (RTO) are the first line of defense to prevent concrete defects as they are directly involved in supervision of concreting works, they may be involved in development projects requiring addition and alteration of existing buildings in conjunction with new developments.This series of programme will provide the participant with the technical knowledge on the causes of structural and non-structural defects in concrete, their remedies, repairs and the preventive maintenance needed to upkeep these structures.

With the increasing awareness and effort of adoption of sustainableconstruction which will require less of natural resources and increasethe reusability of engineered material, the Industry has been exploring the use of engineered wood products such as Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) and Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as readily available sustainable way of construction.The workshop will be focusing on the potential benefits andpossibilities of using engineered wood products for medium risebuildings. The goal of the workshop is to provide a general overviewand understanding toward embracing the development of thestructural design of Glulam and CLT buildings.During the workshop, several calculation case-studies will be shown inorder to help the participants to understand on the main concepts oftimber engineering.
