Whilst the ideal of adopting a zero-waste approach, on grounds of sustainable construction, is well understood, to achieve it in practice can be challenging. A great deal of research has been undertaken worldwide on recycled aggregates and their use in construction and the standards/codes are slowly becoming more receptive. However, just as in the case of natural aggregates, it is important to understand how best to develop the use of recycled aggregates. Based on the vast amount of information, collated from over 1400 publications originating globally from over 65 countries, analysed and evaluated, and presented in over 600 print pages in a book form, this workshop aims to discuss the production, characteristics and use of recycled aggregates in mortar, concrete, geotechnics and road pavements. In addition, environmental impact arising from the use of the materials will be addressed.References will be made to the related standards and codes, as well as case studies undertaken using recycled aggregates. The book, used as course notes, is structured in an incisive and easy to digest manner and is particularly suited for aggregate suppliers, ready-mixed concrete producers, design engineers, specifiers, contractors, as well as academics and researchers.

29 Nov 2019 to 25 Nov 2019

With increasing numbers of building & infrastructural as well as industrial assets located in close proximity to, and even within aqueous or marine environments, protection of materials of construction, particularly steel and other metals, against corrosion is of great importance. The seminar will address the developments in the understanding of galvanic corrosion, and the various methods and procedures necessary for achieving corrosion protection, with particular emphasis on cathodic protection.

Portable fire extinguishers can be real life savers as they can be used both at home and the workplace. This seminar will provide an update on the latest SS 578 : 2019 Code of practice for the use and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. Portable fire extinguishers are regulated fire safety products and compliance with the requirements in the SS 578 is necessary as stipulated in the Fire Code. SS 578 covers the requirements for selection, installation, inspection, testing and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers. It defines comprehensive requirements for selecting and using the appropriate type of extinguishers for various classes of fires.(CPD units)SCDF - 5 CPD / PEs & CEngs - 3 PDU

The specific objective of Module 2 on Earth Retaining Structures is to familiarize participants with various types of earth retaining structures adopted in Singapore and the region. This module is useful to those who are involved in the construction and supervision of earth retaining structures used in civil engineering and building projects.

Collapse is every engineers worst nightmare. Fortunately, not every engineer must go through the experience of a collapse first- hand as we can all learn from the mistakes of others. This course aims to impart knowledge by way of sharing examples of structural engineering failures so engineers can learn how not to repeat such mistakes. It will also cover the relevant areas of SS EN 1992 series on Design of Concrete Structures, with reference to structural engineering failures

Formwork structures have always been a highly hazardous item inthe construction industry. Continuing failures of formworks inSingapore have raised considerable alarm in the industry, thegovernment and the public. To address these concerns, and to update an outdated Code ofPractice for formwork, a Workgroup was formed in 2012 to developa new Code of Practice, SS580.This one-day course on formwork design and safety to revisedstandards and EuroCode aims to accomplish the following: Provide background material to and useful information onimproved standards in this area for this critical topic inworkplace safety; Present the basics of safe design of formwork structures andessential design requirements of SS580; Describe significant parts of the new Code of Practice forFormwork SS580:2012 to facilitate its use by designers andconstructors; Review a number of failure of formworks in Singapore andabroad to convey an understanding of causes; Discuss techniques to identify and evaluate the hazards, andmanage the risks; and, Offer practical guidelines for good practice in formworkdesign, erection, use, dismantling, inspection, andsupervision. The focus will be on basic concepts and procedures currently in usefor formwork in the construction industry. Objectives will include identification of principal contributory factors to formwork failures and their underlying rootcauses, and discussing how the new Code can eliminate or alleviate the problems.

Structural steel is still in demand for their high quality and productivity while stainless steel and aluminium has appealing qualities leading to an increasing use in the Construction Industry. Participantswill have a better understanding on various corrosion methods on structural steellike hot dip galvanising, anti-corrosion paint & coating. Issues related to inspection, maintenance and repair of steel structures will also be discussed.

This course is intended to assist participants to prepare for the Institution of Structural Engineers Chartered Membership Examination (CME), in accordance with the Institution's guidelines.6 PDU (confirmed) over 2 lessons
